ABOUT

Our Goals and Research

The goal of the SSNE-STaR Center is to provide the participants with a comprehensive understanding of how to lead and implement patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and comparative effectiveness research (CER).

What is PCOR and CER?

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) and Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) are essential approaches in healthcare research that prioritize improving patient care and outcomes. PCOR focuses on understanding the outcomes that matter most to patients, emphasizing patient preferences, values, and experiences in the decision-making process. By directly involving patients in research, PCOR ensures that healthcare interventions align with their needs and improve their quality of life.

Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER), on the other hand, compares the effectiveness of different treatments, interventions, or healthcare practices to determine which works best for specific populations or conditions. CER helps healthcare providers, policymakers, and patients make informed decisions by evaluating the benefits, risks, and outcomes of various options. Together, PCOR and CER empower stakeholders to make evidence-based decisions that lead to better, more personalized healthcare for all, especially for underserved communities.

Program Overview

Transform Healthcare with Us

Real-World Experience as Embedded Scholars

Scholars in our program are embedded within safety net organizations, where they work directly alongside healthcare professionals serving underserved populations. This hands-on experience allows scholars to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and clinical practice, ensuring that cutting-edge research leads to real-world improvements in patient care. By working in these dynamic environments, scholars gain invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities in delivering equitable healthcare, while contributing to transformative solutions.

Personalized Mentorship for Career Growth

Each scholar is paired with two dedicated mentors—a clinical mentor and a research mentor—who provide personalized guidance throughout the program. This dual-mentorship model helps scholars develop advanced competencies in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and comparative effectiveness research (CER), as well as in health informatics, data science, health equity, and dissemination and implementation (D&I) research methods. With tailored support, scholars are equipped to thrive in both clinical and research environments, building the skills they need for long-term success in their careers.

Make an Impact by Advancing Health Equity

Our program is committed to improving health equity by enhancing the diversity of both scholars and mentors, and by focusing on the needs of historically underserved populations. Scholars will work with a diverse patient population —offering a unique and critical opportunity to address disparities in healthcare outcomes. Through their research, scholars will contribute to solutions that improve care for these communities, making a real-world impact on health equity and social justice.
